Ten Years of Green Wave Program!

McKittrick Park in the Lord Roberts neighbourhood is slated for a makeover!

In 2006, the City of Winnipeg and Take Pride Winnipeg! first partnered to give youth a summer employment opportunity which also gave them a chance to make a difference in their community. Now in its tenth season, Green Wave is funded by both the City of Winnipeg and Progressive Waste Solutions, and is administered by Take Pride Winnipeg!. Today, the Green Wave will be painting a park building and benches at McKittrick Park while children from the community assist the Green Wave in the beautification effort. A litter cleanup of the area will also take place.

Green Wave employs 14 youth aged 16 to 19 for the summer months, who assist Winnipeg BIZ zones to keep their neighbourhood clean and beautiful. In addition, special event days are planned each summer for special projects outside of BIZ zones. The Green Wavers may be involved in activities such as litter pickup, graffiti removal, planter maintenance and park restoration.

"We’re very happy to bring this program to Winnipeg communities for a tenth year," said Tom Ethans, executive director at Take Pride Winnipeg! Inc. “The Green Wave have continued to have an enormous impact in the beautification and cleanliness of the Business Improvement Zones throughout the city”, he added.

“Green Wave proves time and again that a coat of paint, plant care, and graffiti removal make a positive impact on our playgrounds, parks, and community spaces. The program truly illustrates how collaboration and a little elbow grease can energize our neighbourhoods,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “As Mayor, I am proud to provide funding for the Green Wave program which makes a positive impact on our community, and I would like to thank Take Pride Winnipeg, Progressive Waste Solutions, and the Green Wave students for their hard work that helps make our city a place we are all proud to call home.”

Take Pride Winnipeg! wishes to thank its partners of the Green Wave program, City of Winnipeg and Progressive Waste Solutions, for all their support.
