THINK BLUE, GO GREEN!
Think Blue, Go Green at Underworld Scuba, 1819 Portage Avenue
The mural was designed and painted by muralist Jennifer Mosienko. The intention was to create a bright, striking mural in the heart of St. James with a strong environmental message. Mural partners included City of Winnipeg, Take Pride Winnipeg! Inc., St. James BIZ, Underworld Scuba and Herc Rentals.
“An octopus was chosen for its full ability to adapt to its environment rather then to change it. Becoming more aware of choosing to limit one-time use plastics and their impact on our water, oceans and environment was the primary message,” says muralist Jennifer Mosienko. “The mural also features an oceanic scene with Mother Nature, or Gia, and a ship wreck. Mother Nature’s hands are empty as she has no more to give after dealing with our human debris. In the centre, two divers are cleaning the ocean floor, one piece of plastic or debris at a time, illustrating that more individuals need to take action to preserve and protect our environment.”
Over 500 murals can be viewed around Winnipeg, made possible through funding partnerships between local businesses, business improvement zones, community foundations and Take Pride Winnipeg!
“This vibrant mural fits with our mission of making Winnipeg clean and beautiful,” says Tom Ethans, executive director at Take Pride Winnipeg! “We want to encourage everyone to take steps every day towards a cleaner, healthier planet.”
